Shall he make his attempt side ways from his
Cell? But first he must have got out forwards
or backwards: for to get from one Cell only into
another would be no step gained. Suppose

Suppose him got out forwards, and to attempt
think of moving on the outside laterally from
window to window in the same story of Cells: In
the first place he can not do it: for the distance
between a the window of one Cell, and the nearest
window of another is foot, and + the intervening
+were this distance
but half so great

angle would prevent not only his reaching the other window
but so much as seeing it.

Suppose him got out backwards — He is
then in the Cell-Gallery: in view of the Watchmen
from every story, as before. Suppose him travelled
on side ways as far as he can go. He then is
then come to the Prisoners' Staircase. But from
that Staircase he is still separated by a door:
and that door is locked. That door forced, where
is he then? In a staircase commanded in its
whole height by the Watchman on whatever story he
is, and within a few feel of two or three armed Keepers
whom the noise has summoned from their sleeping stations in
