Governor a Corporation
Sole.

Art. 4. The Governor for the time being shall be a
Corporation Sole:+ and as such capable of purchasing Hereditaments
in succession: and of suing and being
sued by that description and not by name.

Provision for the temporary
filling up of
sudden vacancies in
the Governorship

Art. 5. And Whereas in an Establishment of such
magnitude and so composed the smallest interruption
of coercive power might be attended with fatal consequences
Be it enacted that the Governor may from
time to time under his hand nominate any number
of persons on whom in case of the sudden death
or absence or inability through sickness of him or
of each other his powers and obligations or such
of them as are necessary for the due government
and management of the establishment shall provisionally
devolve: in default of which nomination
they shall devolve upon the Sub-Governor, the Chaplain,
the Surgeon, or any other person next in trust,
upon the one in default of the other in the order
abovementioned: or if there should be more such Panopticons
than one, with different Officers respectively
then in each Panopticon upon the Officers thereto respectively
appertaining, in order also as above mentioned.
