Panopticon Bill Escape
man were not in such case to be provided, attempts
on the part of desperate & daring prisoners so circumstances
might be frequent & dangerous Be
it enacted that in the case of a Prisoner committed
for life or having to remain therein for
any term greater than thirty years the punishment
for escaping without force shall be 500 lashes
to be inflicted in the Prison in the same manner
as the same number of lashes would be inflicted
on a Soldier for desertion from his Majesty's
service: for attempting to escape, 300 such
lashes: for making preparation in the view of escaping
150 lashes: if with force twice as much
as if without force: and for such attempt or preparation
the conviction may be before any one
Justice of the Peace for the County in which
the offence shall have been committed: the
punishment to be inflicted under the care of the
surgeon by any person employed about the House.
