of but too many prisons have the effect of introducing
him into a scene of idleness & promiscuous
intercourse, by which the effect of whatever
lessons of industry and good behaviour he
might have received in the said Penitentiary
House would be in iminent danger of being obliterated;
And Whereas by reason of the
different intervals between the sittings of different
Courts in which such offences would in
different parts of the kingdom be cognizable a
committment to the Jails respectively appertaining
to such Courts might be productive of
a delay amounting in some instances to near
three months, in others to near six, and in
others to near twelve months during all which
several terms the Prisoner would over and above
his sentence be suffering a punishment
to the respective amounts aforesaid before it had
been proved that any punishment was due
Be it enacted that in case of escape or
desertion as aforesaid or assumption of a false
name of any of the offences thereto respectively
accessary as aforesaid a Penitentiary Prisoner
