Panopticon Bill Correspondence
suscriber if necessary or so much as to obtain any knowledge of the
character or identity of such subscriber, by which uncertainty not only
much trouble might be occasioned, but a covering afforded in divers instances
to forgeries and other frauds And Whereas in divers instances
it will happen that not only in the same Town but in the
same Parish there will be divers persons bearing not only the same
surname but the same Christian name whereby a direction in the
ordinary way would not be sufficient for the purpose either of correspondence
or of enquiring as aforesaid And Whereas in a Country so
far advanced in the arts of life as this his Majesty's Kingdom there
are few persons so obscure but that at some time or other it shall have
happened to them to have received letters by the Post And Whereas
there are non how obscure soever nor howsoever unsettled in their
abodes but may at the time of their abode in any place cause it to be
known by what means during the continuance of their abode therein
letters will reach them by the said conveyance Be it enacted that
as often as any person for any of the purposes of this Act shall subscribe
or sign his or her name to any Letter, Deed or other printed
or written paper for any of the purposes of this Act such person shall
immediately after such subscription or signature add such a direction
whereby he or she may be found by persons in general and in particular
by persons employed in the delivery of Letters by the Post &
shall also give his or her attestation of the truth thereof by adding
the following words or what is equivalent thereto, viz: which direction
