§3 Belgrave

(a) To save a useless consumption of paper formal beginnings
and endings of letters are all omitted.—

Letters from me are to be supposed to be dated from my
house, Queen Square Place Westminster.—

(b) The contract between Treasury and myself for the
setting on foot the establishment according to the tenor of the
Draught printed in the 28th Report of the Committee of Finance.

(c) Leaving, on the Salisbury Estate, a carriage way by the
side of the Thames, in continuation of Milbank Street. The
effect would have been the making a communication, which
as yet does not exist, between Grosvenor House (Lord Belgrave's
residence) and the rest of the Grosvenor Estate. Extent of the
road (according to the Surveyor General's Report) a full half
mile. See above §.I.p.

(b) The laconism here observable in the stile, was among
the efforts of a drowning man fighting against fate. It
had been pretty well understood before this time, partly from
the report of persons in habits with Mr Long, partly, though
of itself sufficiently, from my own experience, that a communication,
exceeding as the word is, a certain length (that length
however altogether uncertain and unascertainable to me)
would stand no chance of being read. To all other tasks, was
therefore added, that of framing a stile on purpose, to be cut
out from the measure — the inaccessible measure — of Mr Long's
patience.— I had not, as yet, compleatly understood — though
certainly I had every now and then been led to suspect —
an anxious design, under the cover of apparent carelessness,
and conspicuous indolence. It had already become a part —
and that an indispensible one — of Mr Long's plan — that all
