§.2. Secret plan for rendering the purchase useless

In Under the 2d, 3d, 4th & 5th of the above heads,
Your Lordship will see the history of so many distinguishable
negotiations, commenced set on foot by so much
many distinguishable applications, on my part, but all carried
on—at least in so far as it was in
my power to carry them on—at the same
time. Were this a play or a novel, that
I am thus dedicating to your Lordship—my
study would be, of course, to keep your Lordship's
expectation in suspense, and keep back
the denouement of the intrigue, and keep out of
sight the catastrophe, in each instance, as
long as possible. Perspicuity, however, not
—not entertainment—being the object here
in view, nor even that attainable without
some difficulty, I shall take the liberty of
subjoining in this place a brief intimation
of the result of each negotiation, at this
early stage, reserving for the several correspondent
heads, the development of the intervening
incidents.
