infelicity superadded all along—that while it was
plainly {plainly} ever so plainly impossible to get advance forward,
to any useful purpose, to , it was alike
impossible for me to recede or stop, without bearing the
whole blame and dishonour, as well as the whole
loss and ruin, upon my devoted head.

This much is what it seemed necessary, in
this preliminary stage of the narrative to submitt
to your Lordship's notice, but any apparent inconsistency
should be observed between the language employ'd in the at present
in drawing out the thread of the history
in giving the history of the several transactions, and the
language employd by me from time to time,
on the occasion in the course of the transactions themselves.

And here let me be permitted to observe remark before
the period is put to this already too voluminous and
tedious preface, that the whatever complication
may be observed remarked in the transactions themselves,
and therefore by necessity by an unenviable consequence in the peculiar
of them, has been has been among the resources
of the authors of my fate. To throw things into
confusion was, in the agony of the conflict produced
by an unprincipled opposition, the momentary sad &
much-regretted apposite resource wish of the only man
of inventive genius whose services the country
was ever permitted to reap the benefit by Mr
Pitt. Such was the—not the plan—but in
a moment of despair the delirious dream—the
momentary unformed embryo conception, of an ardent mind,
driven by a course of torture into despair. In the present
