subject, for that . not to Mr Long, but to
Mr Nepean – by the following letter.

A 5. Mr Bentham to Mr Nepean. 10 March 1800
Belgrave Opposition – Press Long to say yes or no.

Queens Square Place Westmr 10th Mar 1800

Another point, to settle with Mr L Grosvenor Opposition.(a) (a) See Notes
In the opinion of Mr Boodle, (Ld. Gs. Land Steward) – and Mrr.
Porden his Surveyor, the Penitentiary Plan, from the first, did not
import any prejudice to the Grosvenor Estate.

In Mr Boodles opinion, the same plan, in the event
of a co-operation, proposed by him and embraced with the
utmost alacrity by Mr Bentham, would be attended with a
very capital advantage, to that same Estate: and even render
a favourite project for the improvement of it.

Notwithstanding this, Ld. G. and Ld. B. join in regarding
that same plan as mortal to the value of that same Estate.

They recognize indeed, that if the proposed Tothill Fields
Division-and-Appropriation-Bill were to pass, the mischief to
that same Estate would be much less, than it would be
if the building were set down, where it must be otherwise,
on the Salisbury Estate: but, even when thus reduced, they still
regard it as so great an evil, that they cannot persuade
themselves, that their remonstrances should not prevail, for
the driving the Penitentiary Plan, out of the Estate that has
been purchased for it: and it is therefore, and therefore only,
they refuse their co-opperation in regard to the Tothill Fields
Bill
