being received into the Penitentiary House. It
was on that occasion (I think) that I must have
pointed out the number of 2150, the mention of which mentiion
will occurr in some of the succeeding documents.
I had it with me, and left him in possession

Mean I in my turn took the opportunity
of Before my next and proposing to him
to turn to the continuation of that same history,
so far as concerned the purpose in hand viz
the actual number of his subjects – the population,
according to the latest and the intervening accounts
of this part of his empire. Of the modern
history and then present state of it, his knowledge
was as compleat as of its above mentioned antiquities.
He referred me to a Clerk, who knew
nothing about the matter: but who was being
civil and obliging, referred me to a another Clerk
whose business it was to know every thing. This
was Mr Raven whose business it was to do Mr
Baldwin's business. Mr Raven acknowledged himself
to know every thing: as well as to do every thing that was done by any body. He too was civil enough,
but but mere civility it was more pleasant to him
to display the extent of his knowledge by general
demonstrations, than to furnish me with such of the particulars
of it as were apposite to my purpose.
The topics were the inadequacy scantiness of his salary,
with the firmness of his probity and other wants the richness of his information: the
