§ 8 Establishment
Declining, on the plea of irregularity, the
communication of a producible copy from his
office, he indicated of himself, the Treasury Office to
which the letter went, as an office from which
the communication he took for granted was to
be had. I lost no time in hunting for
it, caught Mr Long or one of his deputes –
and obtained his refusal, seasoned with the
usual peevishness.
Afterwards in conversation with Mr Nepean
I took occasion to speak of this reserve all this darkness – of
the difficulty mystery in one the office and the refusal
in the other. – He was scandalized. Mr
King's office had been his: and without his
mentioning it, I took into my own mind
how the of the contrast in what a degree the spontaneous
on his part had confidence manifested at that time (and on a
memorable occasion which may have been mentioned
elsewhere) contrasted with the pertinacious
closeness of other gentlemen whose titles to
honour is seemed not quite so conspicuous in
their conduct as in their titles. Not that
Mr Nepean is without his secrets, there are
papers of his which might as soon be be
torn one of the Moon as out of his office.
But the persons against whom his books are
shut are enemies.
