time, it failed. Wherefore I would not, that any scribbleation
on the subject appeared to come from me. But were you to
preach something to that effect, it would be profited by: otherwise
future meetings will have the effect of past ones.(d) Something
of that sort, passed between you and Mr L. about my £2000.(e)

The "reference" spoken of in your letter of the 24th I took
for granted was in black and white. But, on asking Mr King
yesterday, he knew of no such thing: and no Clerk, who could
give any information on the subject being to be found, he had
the goodness of himself to say that if there were any such thing, he
would give me a line in the evening. No such line having
come, it follows that the supposed reference was nothing more
than loose talk: and therefore, if no application be made in
writing
, no answer will ever be returned. Would there be any
harm in Mr L's hearing from you, that, from some misconception
or other, it was a matter of doubt with Mr K. whether
an answer was really wished for, to the questions that were put?
(f)

In obedience to Your Honour's commands, I
sat this morning in the Garrett with the Book of
Job before me, till a little bird flew in and whispered
that you had taken up your hat, and stole
out at the back Gate. My conclusion was, that
the letters you spoke of had crowded in so thick
as to have driven the idea of my existence out of
your memory. But perhaps, upon putting your
hand into your pocket for the paper that was to have
been brought from Fulham,- Co. it was not there,
and so you shirk off conscience - stricken. Serve me
so again, and I will tell Mr N. of you: or else
tell somebody what you told me of somebody, and
so you.
