§ 8 Establishment
F.11 (a) Here commences the paper referred to in the foregoing
note.
F.11 (b) Note on the Original. So, instead of the words proposed
to be cancelled, insert the following – viz: as
would be otherwise be provided for in the Hulks.
F.11 (c) This must have been the number previously stated in a
conversation at least it and most probably in black and
white – as the number that was to be considered as the
indicated by the Returns printed in the House of Commons
papers mentioned in a preceding note. F 10 (a)
F.12 (a) That so much of this paper as is included
within the brackets was never sent to Mr Nepean
or any body else, is certain: whether the
other part went, or whether the preceding paper was
thought sufficient, I am not altogether clear. I
am inclined to think it went did go. At any rate the
perfect groundlessness of the idea conception pretended to be entertained
int he Duke's letter was perfectly apparent to
Mr Nepean, and all along assumed to be so in several conversations
between him and me. His surprize at the
pertinacity with which this flagrantly so palpably groundless
a conception was adhered to (maintained
would scarcely be the proper word since no attempt
was ever made to defend it) was not small.
The exact final causes of this and so many other
phenomena, was, at this time at best, as much
a secret to him as to me: – it being such as
one honourable man would could not have disputed on
the part of another.
