17 Feb. 1802 F.13
§ 8 Establishment
F.13 () I do not, at this distance of time, exactly
recollect how a this
precise number – this number
2150 came to have been that spoken of. My
copy extract of the Duke's Letter of the 14 Oct had not any number in it
of my Extract and my recollection on this subject
be exact. The number of 2150 had afterwards been talked
of at least no [ ].</del>
F.13 (c) This date (August the month, with a blank for
the day, was incorrect. The letter meant by
it was the abovementioned letter of the 14th of October
1799. This with a suggestion list of mine to Mr Nepean
was written in great haste, without opportunity of
turning to the documents.
F. 13 (d) This supposition, of the mention of a specific
number in the letter in question must
also have been a mistake.
F.13 (e) Along with this paper, went the other, printed
in § 3 ....., relative to the appo apprehended sacrifice of the establishment to Ld Belgrave.
F.14 (a) Pressed by Mr Nepean, ashamed of an
obstinacy for which no honest cause or tolerable
pretence could be found Mr King had at last
pretended to be sensible, that the Duke's reasoning
letter was such as could not be made use of: and
had consented that some shorter one should be
substituted to it. The object of this proposed letter of mine
was – to find an apposite expression for such shorter
one.
