G.1. [not ] Mr Bentham to Mr Long. 10th Apr 180010 April 1800
Arbele resists fire - seldom purchaseable - £300 asked for buying
a chance lot.
Arbele is a wood, particularly noted for comparative arbile purchase?
incombustibility. It is only by accident that any of it is to
be bought. From Mr Broadwood's the Harpsicord maker, I
could have at this moment about 40 or 50 load of it at what
I am told is a reasonable price. About £300 would cover
all charges of conveyance &c. As the opportunity is casual,
so is the continuance of it altogether precarious
The importance of a flooring of this wood, in the
character of a security against fire, is so great, that I
could not answer to myself the omitting to take whatever
chance may be afforded by this my humble application,
for an imprest for this purpose. If you will have the
goodness to order a warrant for that money to be made
out, it may lie with the proper Clerk, not to be delivered
to me, but on the production of Vouchers proving the purchase
to have been made. (a) (a) See notes With a letter in my hand
from you, saying that such a Warrant is, or would be
ordered, I would contract, if the wood on examination proved
suitable: otherwise such an opportunity as I could not
expect to see recurr again in time, must be foregone. (b)(b) See notes
