2 Jan 1802 2dy To Ld Pelham
Pitts Signature
Delayed
With all these facilities, such was my felicity
that in less, though not by many days less, than
a twelvemonth from that time, principal<add>divers instruments of </add> conveyance with
some of the title deeds though not all the title deeds
together with some of but without the and nor yet the necessary Counterparts
of the existing Leases, was actually in my possession.
Mr Pitt, for fear of my having it too
soon, having kept the principal conveyance lying upon
his table three weeks or the and I don't know
how much more, after it had been signed by
the other Lords. — I living in the Treasury passages,
or among the Porters the whole time, urging
at my humble distance, and through a
of offices official hands the consummation completion of
the formal ceremony of this lingering signature.
Whether at the very time of accepting executing the
conveyance and paying the public money in
consigneur — whether at this very time it
had already been determined by Mr Pitt that
the public should never have the benefit
whether the day that saw the money in the pocket
of the noble proprieter saw the full accomplishment
of the only danger which the bargain
had in view — these are questions [which I
must be content to leave in the obscurity
in which my humble Nature is involved]
which I have no means of must confess myself unable dragging out of
the obscurity in which they are involved.
