As to the plan of avoiding explanation, the
interference of Mr Nepean — an event altogether
unexpected, was a strike of like a thunder strike to Mr
Long. He was at his wits end, such was
his terror at the thoughts of facing Mr Nepean
and such his subterfuges in consequence, that
Mr Nepean after hunting him for weeks I know
not how many weeks, said to me at last
I don't know what is to be done —

I then got evidence
of his part
1. Longs refusal
to see me.
2. The refusals
being without pretence.
Anxious to establish if possible, by irreversible
evidence two important re material matters of fact — that
Mr Long had refused all explanation with me,
and that that refusal was without pretence,
I had begged of Mr Nepean to put two questions
times to him — whether he did not.
The refusal on the part of Mr Long to
hold any further communication with me — that
direct and positive refusal which in the distress
and agitation produced by the rapid but official conversation I
had succeeded at last in forcing upon him, was had been
the my best if not my only plea for solliciting the
interprection of Mr Nepean. It concerned me
