in which the intention of going on with the plan
had been pretended to be expressed, pledged nobody
for to any thing. It was a mere question put
to mere: and a question so contrived, that my
answer to it would equally have served the
purpose. The price terms being secured by me all the difficulty the sole
consideration
would have been on which of two opposite
grounds to reject it: whether for being so high
as to be exorbitant, or so low as to be convert
the former price of it exorbitance, or itself of
being delusive and impracticable. My answer
whatsoever might be the tenor of it, could afford
no disturbance to this plan, if any not sufficiently
guarded in any part, they gave me checkmate
at once. It fell into the case of Mr Palmer.
If guarded on all points, there was remained the old and
sure resource of not taking the smallest notice
of it. We were so and to this game on both
sides, that we could have play'd it blindfold.
Knowing Assured that every thing that could be refused
would be refused, my own way was so to fortify
the application with reasons that the rejection
of it should be impossible. The only game they
had left to play then was though unhappily but too dare one are to get the application
