23 Feby 1802
§ 11 Disarmed

Connecting Observations

That same day (20 June 1801) or the next, I
went with my exercise to my Tutor Preceptor. He examined
it with care – made such amendment
in it as he thought proper. The copy with
his corrections in pencil lies before.

Notwithstanding what had passed, he was
still in the persuasion – or in the hope at least
that all would be as it should be: and that
with this Memorial instrument in his hand, short and
pretty, cleared of all histories and all reasons
with a specific demand under each head, and
the figures in the right places, he should
be able to master or soften away the repugnance
and clear up the perplexities of Mr Long. On any other supposition,
the pains he was thus giving himself would have
been
the time I had got him to steal he was that stealing from one
branch of the public service to bestow upon another
would have been so much thrown away.

There was more however in the business however done
could be settled at one meeting. This was
the 12th of June. The date of the Disarmed
Memorial as marked at the time on my copy is the 19th.
Two sums remained to be liquidated: both the of
them the amounts of the rise of prices, one in the
to represent the expense of building: the other, that of the provisions
&c for annual maintenance. The interval was
employ'd in the adjustment of these sums. I
pressed for it, not only as the involving my
only claim for catching the tail of the advancing season,
but as a test of sincerity, and if obtained, a pledge of it.
