§ 11 Disarmed Memorial & its consequences

Mr Bentham to Mr Nepean
Queens Square Place Westmr 9 June 1800

The meeting tomorrow may be worse than useless unless
I can have as much time with you today as I had
near Lady Elgin's. I shall send in my card to you at 3 and
stay till I see or hear from you.

I hope the Memorial is brought to Town.

I.1. Mr Bentham to Mr Nepean. 10th June 1800.
Begs N. would draw up Disarmed Memorial – According to
L. Armed no Memorial – though N revised it – L hunting
for objections – Lord S's Land unfit – wont say he will give
Wise's – or money for possession of Lord S's – thus refuses J.B.
possession then imputes to him the not getting it – means
to deceive Nepean.

Did not you offer before them to draw up my Memorial
for me? At least something that was next kin to it – Do
so then: – it will not only afford me my best, in not to say
my only, chance – but even be the least troublesome course
to yourself. – I send you a copy. of the condemned one, for
that purpose. It is not enough for you to draw the Memorial:
you must be known to have drawn it. In making
me this offer in public as you did, you had certainly
that in view. – You are in for it: you cannot refuse
me. The very self same paper, which, if it were thought
mine, would remain for ever without notice, would, if
known to be yours, be either acceded to immediately, or at
the worse marked for alteration, till it were altered to their
mind. so I see but one way in which the business can
be done: which is – for you to draw the memorial, make
it to Mr Long's mind, and then set me to sign it. You
think they mean to carry the business through: I am
very glad you do: it was my only hope. –
