+S3 S.10 Defined Memorialist & its Consequences Apr 21 1800 June 20 1800
12 June 1800

Mr Bentham to Mr Long — 12 June 1800

Presses for the £500 a reduced sum for the immediate site. Till
then no plan and Estimate the foundation being unexamined.

For £500 for buying
out the Leases close
upon the armed Memorial.

In obedience to their Lordships directions by your Letter
of the 20 of February last, the Occupiers and other persons,
interested in Lord Salisbury's Estate purchases for the Penitentiary
Establishment, have been applied to: all that could be come
at (twenty in number) have given in their demands: but
owing to various circumstances (such as the difficulty of
coming at certain Deeds (a), which may be necessary for the
compleat and regular liquidation of those demands in certain
instances) and unavoidable delay has occurred, the precise
termination of which cannot be assigned. Meantime, for want
of a sum in hand, for making satisfaction to such of the
Occupiers, from whom the actual possession of a spot sufficient
for the immediate site of the Building would be obtainable,
I have hitherto been, and for an indefinite length of time
may thus continue to be, unable so much as to make the
examinations requisite, for compleating what concerns the
foundations, and other particulars of the plan of construction
for the Building. £500 in hand would be sufficient for
that purpose: I write this therefore, for the purpose of conveying
to their Lordships this my humble request, for that sum to
be advanced to me on account. Should this application not
be complied with, the whole Season may be lost. (d)
