§ 10 Disarmed Memorial & its consequences
I.4. Mr Bentham to Mr Nepean. – 12 June 1800.
Allowance for rise of prices – Unbiassed opinion, whence, Agricultural
Board? Will N ask? – if not J.B.
Could not you send, in your own name, or with the
intervention of any other person, the inclosed paper, with
such corrections, if any, as you might think proper, to the
Secretary, or some other active Member of the Board of Agriculture,
with or without an intimation, that it may afterwards
be made the subject of an official reference?
If this is not done, I mean to apply to that quarter, in
my own name, for my own guidance. But how much
better would it be, if it were made, as above, in a manner
which should preclude all possible suspicion of partiality?
For my own part, I assure you most solemnly, that I have
never had the smallest intercourse on the subject, directly or
indirectly, with any Member of that Board. It was but
yesterday it came into my head: and I have never mentioned
it to any body but yourself. I have formed framed the question purposely,
in such a manner that nobody might be able to
guess the person interested.
