K. Fake Report
A question that will here naturally occurr present itself to
your Lordship, is – how I took this – what my steps I
took conduct was on the occasion, when the intelligence papers
reached me, since it did not reach me?
My Lord, I took none at all.⊞1 ⊞ This matter was stated as being under consideration. I sat silent.
There was a treaty,⊞2 ⊞ though on all sides but one a sham treaty, as Your Lordship has seen already, going on all this
while – they were amusing Mr Nepean.
The negotiation My interest being still in such able and such
powerful hands – I still hoped flattered myself with the hope every thing might
possibly terminate end for the best. By sitting still silent
I took the benefit of that chance. Nothing could
have been got – something –I know not what – might be lost – by
irritation. I therefore gave falshood and calumny
their its full swing. It was for these
reason I sat silent, and gave falshood oppression and calumny
there full swing.
It was not my business
to push quarrels
about words. I knew
not the important
practical deductions
that were about to be
made built upon these purposely
ill chosen words.
