Change of Ministry — Insidious Letter

Letter 24 Mar 1801

I am now come, my Lord, to the last stroke
but one in this picture of the Treasury: and a finishing
one it is in every sense.

Upon the accession of the new first Lord, the About the month of March last, upon the revolution
in the Ministry, and the accession of the first March 1801
new first Lord, a day & time of clearance came for the Augean Stable came to be
cleared: the pile of accumulated business was to
be disposed of at any rate: and with Penitentiary
House with the name of Bentham annexed tacked
to it, appearing upon the face of the
Minutes, printed as well as unprinted, and upon
the list of arrears — something or other was at all events absolutely
necessary to be done in it. On the 24th
of March 1801 a letter signed Charles Long
was accordingly rec sent to me from the Treasury
and the same day or the next received by me at my House.

When your Lordship after consider compares this date
after considering the inevitable and unexpected
occurrence occasion by which the necessity of this letter
and the letter itself accordingly was produced,
your Lordship compares the date of it, with the
date of the day (14 July 1800) at which the anonymous
and trembling imposter left the Board in full consideration
of a Memorial the substance of which had then already
been before them for three months, your Lordship
I am confident will not regard it as in the nature
of men and things that any thing less than
