Secret Minutes
To the perfidy of the argument let me add the
ingratitude in not saying from whom they had it.
From whom then had it they Your Lordship remembers perhaps. They got it from I gave it them
me it was from me † † See §.1. Evidence J.B. I gave it them, that they might not use it.⊞ ⊞ I had spit upon it – and made it as I thought so foul, that even they would not be ashamed to take it up. But shame would prevent even them from taking it up. thinking I thought I had it and spoilt it made it too
for foul even for their reproachful was the supposition use. So vile was the imputation, I declare
to your Lordship I was almost ashamed of starting now given a four years experience
it when I came to see it in print, I was
almost ashamed of having started it. What have
I been doing said I to myself, this is not
history but prophesy: and that sort of prophesy
which being interposted as satire.
My Lord they saved my credit: and so I
will forgive them for their ingratitude: they
fulfilled my prophesy, and made history of my
satire. They saw the appositeness of the argument
– they did not see feel the perfidy of it: they
plunged for it into the into which I
had thrown it, and they bottled they plunged for it drew it out and bottled it up for use.
This was what I got my Lord, by putting
the Finance Report (as Your Lordship may recollect) with this my evidence
in it, into the hands of Mr Rose.
