§ Grounds King's unprinted Letter 28 July 1800

The view taken obtained of this part of the the above correspondence – of
that part of which the parties were it should seem
not ashamed – or at least not to such a degree ashamed
but that the purpose of the exigence whatever it was that
surmounted their prudential to publication, got
to the idea of that part of which they were ashamed in respect of which
they yielded to the sense of shame – of which they were
ashamed – and to such a degree as to at all hazards
and in spite of all inference, to keep the curtain screen
down upon it before it: to guard it against the intrusion scrutiny of
the public eye – of the eye of the House of Commons.

By the opening of the Treasury Minute it
appears that in addition to the letter of the 14th
of October 1795 signed by the Duke's own most noble hand, there was
another written by the direction of the same most
person, but signed only by his prime mover – and
which
a letter of Mr John King, which was no more
fit to make its appearance than the Duke's: is than
the Digest of the 28th of June the same year 1800 to the Treasury by Mr Sollicitor White.

For this attempt to suppress evidence I am sorry
to observe the public is indebted to the infant virtue of the Administration
of Mr Addington: whether the attempt will
be alternately successful, the event will show. I
shall have occasion to give it a more particular
consideration, when I come to the suspect of this narrative,
along with other attempts of the like nature
and hitherto for want of the wholesome discipline of Parliament,
attended with the same impunity and
success.
