5. Encrease of terms

5. Fifth and last alledged ground for relinquishment – The
great
Encrease of terms now proposed which by Mr Bentham now
proposed.

In Your Lordship's candour and discernment, what
I have to say under this head will I hope flatter myself, have
found its anticipation: but to make sure, I must beg
Your Lordship's indulgence for a few very simple observations
for a short and simple recapitulation.

In the darkness produced by the word "proposes", the
hope of Honourable Gentlemen is to reap the benefit of
falshood while they escape the ignominy infamy. In the The former
hope will I hope they will be disappointed, in the latter
I am sure they will. I am sure

In speaking of using the terms in question as "proposed" by me
what they wish Parliament to understand is that the
terms so "proposed" were borne without which, by
reason of the knavity with which I adhered to them, the
business would not be done. If the business could
not be done with any less degree of expense than the expense
attendant on those terms, the greatness of encrease in the terms so
proposed might afford according to the magnitude of it a ground for the relinquishment.
But suppose terms a million of terms
as great had been proposed, what would that be to the purpose?
those terms really confine being proposed only and not adhered
to, in what degree would the public purse have suffered
by them?

My Lord, your Lordshp has seen that this
wretched subterfuge which mean as it is, I saw was
not too for the men I had to deal with was not only
anticipated by me and seen though from the beginning, and but but pushed by me in front of
that shame of possible might keep them, if possible,
from slinking into it.
