5. Encrease of terms
With the admiration commanded by transcendent
genius, Your Lordship has often seen can not but have often seen the Harlot's
Progress and the Rake's. Look higher now, my
Lord, and behold the Jesuits.
In In the Anonymous Letter comes for the
first time the word proposes. In Through the whole course of the Secret Minutes
throughout the word proposes keeps its ground.
Why so? because such another vehicle and cover
for equivocation the language does not furnish.
In the At the period of anonymous reporting the word was
a safe one: in those days I could not quarrel
with it: for though hope was sickening, still they
were days of hope: that terms had been "proposed"
by me was what I could not at that time have
observed: the milstone that had been hoisted raised up to crush
my hope had not as yet been dropt. The word
"Proposed" was then a safe word: it became afterwards the
established word: and doubly proper because so
established and so safe.
So to the Mr Bentham's terms: in the anonymous letter they
were be no worse than "new":⊞ ⊞ though as to the novelty, never was there a more shameless falshood, as the Secret Minutes swelled, these
new terms ripened: and in conclusion they were
not only encreased terms but the "encrease" had become
"great".
