§ 14 Secret blabbed by King
With this letter ends the series of private and
till now unprinted documents: and with it therefore
all such times such as are to be had
from documents of the negotiation which on a
former occasion I have spoken of as still depending
between Mr Nepean on one hand,
and Messrs Long and King, the two other Secretaries
from the two other offices on the other.
Before I conclude Your Lordship will naturally
expect to hear how and at what point
that of time as well as business that negotiation
terminated ended. My Lord like so many
other businesses and so many other things it had
no decided, or at least discoverable termination
any where. It evaporated, it grew faint
and raped by degrees: it ended like the River
Oxen according to Montesquieu, to be like the
River Niger – like the Sentimental journey –
like so many other things – God knows where.
Whenever it did end I did not know knew not of its
ending till some time afterwards. I can not even
determine by any precise mark even that secondary
point of time. From Mr Nepean alone
could I do what if any thing was to be known,
there was nothing which it could be pleasant to
me to hear: nothing which it could be pleasant
to my protector to report to me. He had
nothing determinate to mention to me – no determinate
time for mentioning it: What he
did
