§ 14 Secret blabbed by King
did at last mention which in answer to the questions
which at length I could not help putting
to him nor he help hearing from me, was what in substance
at least I remember beyond danger of
oblivion, and what I can take upon me to
report without danger of contradiction from any
the respectable quarter from which I received it.
He had tried every thing upon Mr Long and
spoken to him without reserve: he had the
system of terror upon him as well as the spirit
of conciliation. But whatever impression he
had made upon the passive faculties of the
Honourable Gentleman (and surely such truths
the impression made by such representations truths from
such so reputable and what was much more
impressive so near quarter could not have
been a weak one) there it stopped: the
course taken by his active faculties shewed no
marks of it: – it was, be still the same nothingness in action
with the same crookedness of design to govern
it. What is certain is that If the conscience of the instrument
was any thing the better for the sermon, such so
was not in any degree the conduct of his instigators and abetters of those who had set him
on and given him his lash of perfidy: and
to the last Your Lordship, will find him silent and
motionless, between the refuting immobility of his superiors,
and the chastising rod of Mr Nepean.
