20 Jany 1802
any one part of the picture. There is a Frenchman,
my Lord, of the name of Ove, whose
business office it is in all countries here – there – places where his upon occasion
every where assistance is wanted – to bear the blame of
every thing. His is the name, and the only
name your Lordship will find to every
part of my picture. Englishmen indeed were
not wanting might have been found, had the
eye of the public been pleased to look for been dissposed happened to turn itself that
way them – skulking behind this Frenchman.
But the eye some how or other – so it happened
– the eye of the public was not disposed
to turn itself that way. What did it
all amount to? a squabble between the Treasury,
and a man who wanted to contract had
been kicking his heels there – a man who
wanted to be a Jailor, forsooth – and a Contractor to contract
at the same time for being one. Well – suppose the man
waits for his Jail a little while longer – what then?
there is no party within The case squabble has nothing
of party in it There is no party in the case – consequently no fun in it.
He'll get his sop in the pan one of these days
– now for him – the Committee will take
care of that. Now see they have got hold of him
by the hand – do you think will they sit still,
and see him sink? – Impossible. – And if he
were to sink? – what's that to us? – who cares
for it? – He'll get into a Jail, instead of keeping
one.
