20 Jany 1802
Such is the language, my Lord, which in their own minds Honourable
gentlemen stiled honourable, seem to have put into the mouth
of John Bull, and perhaps your Lordship will not find
them much mistaken in it. But here lay their
mistake grand error – not to say their infatuation. From my
long-suffering patience, so long as there was hope they inferred
my silence at a time when th my only hope of any
would be in speaking as out, and raising
a hue and cry against them. Judging of
me by themselves, it seemed to them that they
made sure of seeing me swallow the their hook;
at any time, so as it had but the word compensation
for a bust to it. But my Lord, this
analogy failed them: another emblem analogy was alike
lost to them: they run thrust run their own heads
into the bush – shut their own eyes, and thought
that mine would not discover them. But my
eyes have been wide open to them and their
contrivances – to Treasury craft as well as
to film craft – to misdeeds unpubl unpunishable
for as well as dispunishable – ever since I set my foot within
their walls. And as to John Bull, my Lord,
when he has got names to a business, he then
begins to understand it. When the bush is
eaten – and out starts a bear – with a collar
on its neck and an inscription this is a
hare, John sees at once that there is sport
for him: and then comes the time to my it is that he puts his fingers into his ears – eases back
forwards, and pursues.
