14 Jany 1802
feel ones inwards still consuming, and still like
those of the fabled criminal impious man in the fable renewed for and kept
alive for further assurance – and above all to
see human depravity throughout as the sad and
inconceivable cause of effects in themselves so
grievous – depravity in the very spot in which
the eye of a too distant or too obsequious fascinated world
is want to look up to as the seat of transcendent
honour – to see the legacy of guilt
bequeathed to an as yet spotless successor an apparently
and fondly imagined spotless successor,
and to see the successor not only accepting it,
but putting it out to improve at compound interest
– these moral aggravations, by which which punt the
most select part of a man's own species society,
are painted in the darkest colours, and life
itself as a scene of struggle contention without hope
these are accessories aggravations in the contemplation
of which the mere sense of a physical misfortune
is swallowed up and lost vanishes.
