21 Jany 1802
Armed Memorial

handle for inculpation: for, so far from
departing in any respect from the
customary tone of obsequiousness, I
had improved upon it, and gone beyond
it: imploring indeed at every
point the notification of their Lordships pleasure – but imploring it, for no
other purpose than to prostrate
myself before it and obey it.

Strange indeed would it have
been (your Lordship sees) if this
had been a Memorial – had come
under the signification attached on
the occasion to the word Memorial in
the dictionary of Mr Long – mortal
as it was in every part of it – to
the very and only purpose for which
a Memorial had been ordered from
me. What could I do for him Circumstanced as I was, what could
I have done for his relief? I had
been deceived (your Lordship sees
how nor am I ashamed to own it) – I
had been deceived into the hope that his
purposes were directly opposite and even
if I had not been deceived,
still I could have done no otherwise.
