Narrative
My faculties are certainly not equal to what they
might and would have been had they not been
pinched and crushed by the innumerable and
indescribable oppressions and discouragements sustained in the course
of so many anxious years. Yet after all
and though four and fifty years, of which about
ten consumed in a mixture of anxiety and despondency
have now passed over my grey and
devoted head, I do not y even yet (though
to be sure in such a case a mans own feelings
can by no means be given stated as the best evidence)
so it is however, that I do not yet perceive them
to be in any such degree debilitated and reduced;
but that with the help of an engine
of such matchless new and unexampled force as
that for the first the conception of which I am stand indebted
to my quondam pupil my younger Brother –
(who also has his griefs chagrins to struggle with) I may
yet be found altogether incapable to fill the
situation of a Jailor, even though it be upon a pretty
large scale, and although that of a Master
Manufacturer, here as elsewhere should be
combined with it, and I could almost flatter
myself that the fruit and product of them
thus given given in these pages (how reluctantly
the date of these pages when compared with that of
former pages may help to testify,) might even of itself
(though not brought forth in any such ambitious view)
help in quality of a sample to testify the existence
of a still remaining mass of intellectual power, not altogether
incompetent to that humble task.
