4. Though there may have been nothing of particularly
offensive in the stile of his remonstrances,
in the way of heat of disrespect, yet there in
persons so circumstanced there in persons who are full
of their object, and supposing themselves to have
had hard measure, there is apt to be a degree
of low-groundedness and excursiveness which however
natural and excusable on the one part,
yet can not but be productive of such a degree
of molestation, as must also be admitted as
constituting matter of excuse and extenuation on
the other. Instances are not wanting of very
worthy men, whose propensity this way is so strong
and unrestrainable, that as to render the an intercourse
with them scarce endurable – not
only to persons whose who have to cross by whom their wishes
are but even to those whose affections are
on the same side.
5. Though results have been unfavourable to him
and though too particular marks of sympathy are
expressed legible on the face of the few special communications
that have been made to him, and which
as such communications ought to be as concerned of course
in a somewhat cold and formal state, yet many
marks of sympathy and regret may from time to
time have been manifested in his favour, though he
says nothing of them, as is natural enough – but by the
exhibition of these
here he should
waken those other
sympathies, which
it is his object to
excite.
