I mean this evidence of Mr Nepean. Ask
them both says I to him speaking of Mr White
and Mr Long – ask them both º in pity to me
ask them – for much of my reputation which
is all I have left depends upon it – whether
in the course of all the dealings and all the conversations I
have ever had with them, they have either of
them, so much as conceived in their own minds
that they had the smallest reason whatever
that on account of any thing I had written, said
done – or even looked they had any the smallest
reason to complain of me. The answer of each,
as reported to me my by Mr Nepean, was
in terms more much stronger and satisfactory
than that of a simple negative: and upon
a fresh summons question on my part put by me
since the change of Ministry, under by the favour of a chance occasion reconnoitre in the
presence of Mr Henry Addington, the assurance
in which Mr Long was concerned was confirmed
and reported to me by Mr Long. Conscience
bore had too pressed him to close to hard upon him, to soften him
to return the like question upon me.
