9 Jany 1802

After so much as has been said of this letter
the less need be said of their the Treasury whisperings which
I have already spoken of as having preceded it.
So soft the accents – so robust listen gentle the airs of the benevolence
which that breathe on them, that they never so
much as find their way, nor to this hour
had it not been for the change would have
found their way to the only ear that could
have been the better for them – provided always had they been
sincere.

Besides the act entered and re-entered burthen
of the song "the improved state of the colony of
"New South Wales" – your Lordship will find remember
Mr Long and Mr King –
Mr Long talking of incumbency and feelings
and compensation – and Mr King in his goodness
taking it for granted that that compensation
will be a liberal am one – and both
gentlemen beholding figuring to themselves the Beggar Mr Bentham
lying at the bottom of the Treasury steps, a
cap in hand ready and anxious to receive
into it "such compensation as the loss he has
sustained in preparing for his undertaking may
appear to them (Mr Long in the person of their Treasury Lordships) to deserve.
So much for feelings and incumbency and liberality
and Mr Long and Mr King their Lordships: but for this turn
at least Mr Long had he been sincere, would
have found (as he has found since to his terror and his dismay) that he had
been reckoning without his Staff. The correspondence Mr Long's letter in tertinur your Lordship will find at the bottom of the page.
