9 Jany 1802

1801 – the time of the great hurricane, which
amidst so much other lumber, blew out of the Treasury window much other
lumber,
this together with so many other papers.

Nay but (says Your Lordship) Mr Lon
the date of Mr Long's letter to Mr King I see
is the 25th of August 1800: and the date
of the letter of you are speaking of from Mr
to Mr Long is the very day of the
hurricane you speak of: 17 March 1801 where then at the
time during which it could have been lying
in the pocket of Mr. A very
pertinent observation th certainty on the part of Your
Lordship; but I will tell Your Lordship
how it happened. Some day in the end of
month of August or at the furthest same day
early in September the said letter, or to make sure
of having choice
of the
error the full
purpose if not
the tenor of it
in articulate sounds
if not in written
characters – the
sais letter in a
word or the full
equivalent of it.
It must have been King's
unpublished letter of the
28th July 1800 that Long
grounded his letter of
25th August 1800 upon.
went from
Mr King to Mr Long, as Mr King himself
whom I met by accident in the street not late in September
in gracious answer to my humble enquiries, told me:
"every thing was settled he said, and had long been so:
"and was it possible I shuld not have heard
"of it?" Into the said pocket therefore my
Lord, it went: with in the said pocket say from the
same day in August, safe and snug it lay:
till the tremendous hurricane season came in,
when in the midst of the confusion seeing it lying
among the wreck, gentlemen laid their heads together once more,
and clapped on a new date to it.
