Offer of Compensation

Although it were a fable, the moral of it
would here be in its place. The moral of it
is this: In Mr Fill, your Lordship sees a
man in conspicuous office – a man universally
known in the City, and as universally
respected. The fro City Members, far
Members who own to whom belongs by right those places in
the House which Mr Pitt and with his Secretary
occupy only by Sufferance – the four Members
– in short every his particular friends.
In a word of the many men themselves in a situation
to be known – in or out of Parliament
who is there that could live in the City without
knowing Mr Fill! – and who could
know him, without being his friend.

So far much for Mr Fill. In me Your Lordship
sees beholds a man, who though in himself
possessing much more of the worm than
the Lion is and for the best part of his
days, has been in the situation of a the Lion
who had had his friends – such those at least
who had called themselves and perhaps
fancied themselves such – but whose friends
or their friendships at least were no more,
whose situation though at present it has much more
nearer to that of a worm than that of a lion has
so much of in it of that of the one of the fabled such
Lions in it, that though too obscure and too recluse
to have, ever been able to boast of many friends, nay
with but too much grammatical propriety a propriety but too strictly grammatical be said to have had his friends.
