Artifice had combined With the nature and habitual
hardness and of the place, artifice had now combined, in substituting conveying
to me to an assurance, a set of interrogations which instead
of satisfaction promised an addition to the injury.
As Mr Palmer had by ill usage been put off his
guard, and by that means made to afford a pretence for
treating the public faith with him, so was a pretence to
be thus created for breaching it with me. But I flatter myself
that even without Mr Palmer I know how to be angry enough for their stance conversation
and at the same time avoid sinning for their benefit.
Where any expressions of my anger come to be published,
I am pretty well assured that the publication will come
not from any of the Honourable Gentlemen who have ever been
the objects of it, but from me—of that creation, but
from the person moved by it.

Though as far as concerned the dupe
intended the stratagem compleatly failed, yet the
rule I lay down in all cases of ascribing to every
act to the most honourable of the motives capable of accounting
for it requires that I should regard Mr
Hiley Addington, as the dupe of this contrivance rather than the
accomplice.+ My notice is—that He had really been made a real believer in the professed intention
of carry carrying the establishment (meaning always upon
the reduced scale) into effect. He had been prepared for
doing his part towards the production of that effect. But
the confidence was (and Mr Long had thus far done injustice)
that he had rendered impossible to accomplish what was impossible to perform I should
not be brought to undertake: out of spite of prohibitions
rashness should make this conquest over prudence
and the task of making bricks without straw should be embraced
