knowledge occupied that the place which, in a well-informed strong
well furnished and honourable mind would, in some minds would have been occupied
by the principles a knowledge of law and justice.
On the enquiry In judging what is safe and unsafe – what
is right or wrong – Your Lordship can not but
be sensible how widely disparate, how utterly
incommensurable the standards must be which are
looked to by that most noble Duke and such a Commoner man
as I am as myself and an individual – so obscure an individual like as
myself. To know In considering what is safe and unsafe
in a matter in which Parliament has spoken – the
question I for me to put to myself is was – what says the Act Law
of Parliament: the question for the Duke of Portland was
what says Mr Pitt, and Mr Dundas, and Ld Grenville Lord Loughborough
and Lord Spencer and Lord Loughborough and Mr Windham not forgetting
and it thus and Mr Baldwin? and as to what these personages would say
what say my good Mr King and Mr Baldwin.
To know what is right and wrong independently of
acts of Parliament, the question for me again is
what say⊞ ⊞ the undisputed maxims of natural justice? those maxims of justice which a the
sense of common interest has in the
heart breast human heart of man in characters more or less clear
and strong according to the texture of his faculties
and the culture given to them? – for the Duke of
Portland, it is again the same standard and again, and the same question – what says
Mr Pitt and Mr Dundas, and Lord Grenville and
Lord Loughborough and Lord Spencer and Mr Windham, and Mr King and Mr Baldwin?
