I hope I have succeeded in my endeavours to prove
to your Lordship that what was has been done was not impossible
to be done – and this is all I aim at. At
first blush, the char appearance of the crime is no
more that of a crime of the present age, than witchcraft
would be or conjuration. But upon a closer appearance scrutiny what there is miraculous in the
business vanishes; though certainly surely there is enough
of the wonderful remaining in it to impress the
sentiment of surprise on the most incurious mind.
The Duke of Portland (God bless him hath mind) is no
conjuror: for ⊞ ⊞ to my willing of the Duke of Portland that is what nor this time a of any it is not possible for any
man to be one. But what it is just possible
for a man to be in this country and in this age the Duke of Portland is – an
usurper – a deliberate and delar dulard usurping
the authority of Parliament.
