§.8. Observations on the Duke's dispensing power

Understanding all this this much about his business his
Grace saw as clear as day light there could
be neither harm nor danger in it. It was a
true case it was not his a Dukes business to understand
law: left people's indis it was the business of law people to understand
law: people that were paid for it; it was the
King's business to understand law – he was bred
to it – Good or bad law what difference does that make: if the King work at it was a
Kings crime the
which – what everybody
must know he did, there could be no such in
signing it. If he care to take money
for signing it, yes: – that could be a
bad thing: that would be corruption. But
as for money it had nothing to do with cas
the case: nobody had ever offered him a single
farthing or nor would: no, not even to Mr Baldwin.
What was he to do it for? – Only to
oblige a friend his friend: is it corruption in a man
to oblige his friends? Whi What is a man fit
for, or what he can hope for, if he does not
oblige his friends?
or how can he expect to
be paid £,000 a year, for his name and
figure, if he wont does notoblige his friends? What
is any man and in particular what is a Duke of Portland
without friends?

It was Mr Baldwin's business to understand Law. Could he avoid understanding it? That same year he had not so little as £1600 public money for understanding time, for the sole use behest and benefit of his Grace.
