6th July 1807 1 Lloyd for J.B. to Booth & Co
Sir
I write this at the desire of Mr Bentham, who
in the absence of his Brother the General (at present at Petersburgh)
is called upon by the Commissioners for the auditing
of the Public Accounts who form a Board called
the Audit Board sitting at Somerset House to render
an account of a sum of £2,000 advanced to him by
the Treasury in £2,000 on account of the intended
Penitentiary House. In part of his On this occasion
he thinks finds it necessary to give an account of that part
of the expenditure which consisted in the cast iron that
you furnished them with for the frame work of the intended
building. The papers that he happens to have in his
hands, partly from the General, partly from me, are for
the most part sufficient: but there are unfortunately some
little deficiencies which make it necessary for us thus to trouble
you for the supplying of them. The Audit Board have
powers for examining all persons upon oath, and calling
for the production of all papers. But Mr Bentham hopes
and believes therey will be no find no necessity
for troubling you in any such way, but that the vouchers
he has in his hands joined to your answer by letter
in compliance with this request, and perhaps my oath in confirmation
will be sufficient.
I send you herewith a copy of a letter of yours an Account drawn up
by you and purporting to be an Account between you and
General Bentham but without Date. It is directed as you will
observe on the outside "To General Bentham &c &c &c" but
has no Post-mark to it. The date of the last article in
it is Oct. 3 1796. But The date which Mr Bentham finds
endorsed on it in his own hand is 1799 Feb. 20th.
