3 Letter 2
that the money directed by Parliament to be paid to me, should
not have been paid into my hands, and that I should be
called upon to set my hand to a proper acknowledging that
it had been so paid. I regard it however, and even without
remonstrance: for I had been having been too severe a sufferer by delay,
and obstructions, not to be anxious to avoid making any unnecessary
addition to the number.
What seemed to make it necessary for me to mention
that circumstance is this: In the proper regular mode, according
if my conception of it be right, the money should have
been paid by the proper Officers of the Treasury into my
hands, I giving my receipt for it. The money being
in my hands, upon receiving from the Vendor the Marquis of Salisbury or his Agent
Mr Estcourt, the deeds of conveyance, I as Feoffee should have
paid it to them one of them, and taken his receipt for it.
In that case, I should have had his receipt to produce
for it, as a voucher to discharge me from the charge
made upon me by my own receipt as above, and as
such should have produced it to the Board.
To Mr White the Board will accordingly apply, I
suppose, for the voucher containing the acknowledgment or his
part Ld Salisbury's part of his having received the money,
should the production of it be thought necessary. In the Deed of Conveyance
to me (it is by Lease and Release) and which is in my possession an acknowledgment to
that effect is contained of course: and, on the back, stands
a receipt for the money, as if received from me, and
signed Salisbury.
