In nothing of all this will satisfy Mr Chief Inspector:
for all this none to be had. On this occasion
as on every other, one thing alone will satisfy him:
and that is the thing the he alone sees or suspects
is not to be had — whatever that thing be.
By From the production of these books nothing being said of
any other Vouchers, he concludes, and very justly that
receipts for the workmen to whom the sums were respectively
paid, are either not to be had at all, or
not without great difficulty. Thus accordingly are in
the vouchers he pitches upon as peculiarly proper, if
not as exclusively necessary.
To this requisition I beg here to submitt the following
answers
1. That no such receipts were ever taken; and
I am assured that as th no such receipts are ever
taken in the course of any of these trades.
2. That if such receipts had been taken, they
would have been in consequence very little to the purpose
What they would know was that the by order of such
or such a person they had worked for such and such portion of
time at such and such sorts of work at such and or
such and such place or places. But what was to be done
with their work when finished — Even is that a point
that should have come under their cognizance. The
Master Workman by whom they were employed, the
man who was in continual consultation with the
inventor and Chief employer he was the man to know what was to
be done with the several pieces of machinery and so
forth. He accordingly was the man whom I had indicated
in the person of Mr John Lloyd. To him
may
perhaps be to be added
for the same portion of
the time, a Mr Hutchinson. He also is
equally forthcoming.
