Of These men (the labouring men) several I know not how many are dead
A dozen years or so having elapsed, this is what Mr Chief
Inspector aught naturally have reckoned upon

All the rest are dispersed. One alone do I have
whom to meet with; and his abode is as far off as Portsmouth.

Is it Mr Chief Inspectors notion of justice that
I am to pay so much money twice over, because I have
not kept failed in keeping
some of these men are dead,
and the rest gone about their business?

I believe upon recollection he gave intimation
of some other proof that might by possibility be receivable
but without saying what. But, the proof that was to be
had — viz. proof of the payment of the money by the evidence of the person
who had paid — this he had already set at nought.
What other then was to be looked for?

The curiosity expressed by Mr Chief
Inspector
testing the widest range, and appears at the same time
alike averse to the receipt of satisfaction.

Variety of queries are put. To all of them for the
present I hope to stand excused in returning no more
than two answers and those general ones.

1. That the questions are irrelevant.

2. That in the main, if not in every particular, answers
had already been given: viz. in various sundry documents
mentioned in my a letter of mine to the Board
(the first in order I believe) at any rate the letter that accompanied
my Account and therein referred to. If on perusal of
these documents he had found any part of the curiosity expressed
by him unsatisfied, he them the could have found a
ground for ulterior questions. But this information was
was to be had: and
whatsoever information
he perceives it to be
had, this he turns aside
from as beneath his nature.
