Q.S.P. 20 Decr 1808

Sir

I have to acknowledge the receipt of Your
letter dated the 16th 20th instant: and in obedience
to the commands thereby signified,
mention Mr John Lloyd as a person
whom, in the terms of Your said letter I "think
"proper to produce for the purpose of verifying
"upon oath, the several disbursements stated
"in my Account current to have been made
"for wages to the amount of £1821.16s.4d
"to workmen employed in making preparations
"for the penitentiary Houses agreeably to the
"terms of my Imprest."

My obedience to the abovementioned commands
would have been earlier but that I had to find him
out at his present abode to which he has
removed since my last letter communication to the Board,
and at which I found him proprietor of a
very extensive and flourishing establishment,
with a very considerable property in new erected
dwelling houses attached to it.

It is his request that two days notice may
be given to him, lest by reason of temporary absence
it should happen to be out of his the notice should not reach him time enough for
to pay his attendance at the time indicated.

I am inclined to think his such testimony
will be found sufficient for the purpose: but
lest it should not, I subjoin to his address
the best direction which he could afford
me to the other witness person Mr Hutchinson who was concerned
in the making of the disbursements abovementioned.

If Mr Hutchinson were to be examined,
a day would be consumed of a time
which the public is paying for: and I might
should have I suppose have something to
pay him on my own account for the short
journey in all other respects whether it be
or be not found necessary to take his examination
is to me a matter of perfect indifference.

Subjoined are the two directions above spoken
of.

I am, Sir,
Your most obedient
humble Servant
Jeremy Bentham

Wm Walter Esqr
Secretary to the Audit Board
Adelphi
