I had already tendered - viz. the testimony, to be taken in
what manner the Board should please, of Mr John
Lloyd Master Millwright, then my Brother's Foreman, by
when the payments were made and the Books in question kept.

The fact is - that no such receipts were taken: Mr Lloyd
assures me that, in no case within his experience, is it
customary to take receipts of workmen paid by weekly wages.
This in private service: and moreover in the King's
service I am told that no receipts are taken of workmen
in the King's Yard.

Now the apprehension, faint as it is, which has occasioned
you this trouble is this - Mr Chief Inspector being manifestly
desirous of making me pay twice over as much money as he can,
may, for aught I can be assured of, in support of his requisition
of the receipt from the workmen, make objection to the testimony
of Mr. Lloyd on this ground - viz - that having received from my
Brother and me, money to the amount in question, for the
purpose of paying it over to the Workmen, and thereby standing
charged with it, his evidence is inadmissible on the score of interest
the tendency and effect of it being to exonerate & discharge himself.

Now what I remember of the matter from the books
is, that in the case of a Porter who swears to the delivery of
goods - goods put into his own hands by Plff to be delivered to
Deft. this objection has been repelled: and moreover a Factor has
been admitted to prove an agreement between deft & himself as
